Ask Walter!

Walter the Cat is the official mascot and pet of Eden Rivers Editorial. He’s here to answer frequently asked questions, trivia, and common inquiries. So ask Walter. Go ahead. Ask him.

Q: What is the difference between proofreading and copyediting?

A: They are similar practices with one major difference: Copyediting a document happens in its manuscript stage, that is, it is not laid out in its final publication form. This usually indicates the manuscript is in a word processing format. Proofreading occurs after the document is laid out for publication and includes some additional tasks that are more visual than just checking the words on the page. An example would be a magazine page that contains text, graphics, advertisements and page numbers. Editors are asked to check that the page is laid our correctly, or that all the content of the page is correct. Editors are often asked to check the proof against a template, a master document, and even against the original manuscript to make sure text has not been incorrectly changed or omitted.

Q: Why is there such a span in pricing? Why isn’t there just one, flat rate?

A: Each project is different, and some projects will need more time and effort. This is especially true with writing projects; some need more research, and some projects are more difficult to write.

Q: I want to publish a book. How do I go about doing it?

A: First, you should write the book. No wait, first you should come up with an idea for a book. Then you should visit our Editing/Publishing Process page. That’ll get you on the “write track.”

Q: I want to become a freelance writer. What is the best way to proceed?

A: Freelancing is a rough and tumble world, or so I hear. Committing yourself to freelancing means learning the ropes, being willing to accept some losses, and getting up for work all day, every day. If it still strikes a passionate chord, then visit our Tips & Resources for Authors page to get some jump-starting ideas.

Q: The name Walter is unusual for a cat. How did you come to have this name?

A: I am named after The Big Lebowski character, Walter Sochek. It is one of my owner’s favorite movies. And I do look a little like John Goodman.

Q: Who is Eden Rivers?

A: That is an excellent question. I don’t know, I’ve never met her. Try visiting the About the Editor page.
